PROJECT LENGTH: 5 Weeks
PROJECT GOAL: Create an animal-inspired mask out of 1 sheet of 19x24 bristol paper while following manufacturing parameters
PROJECT SKILLS: Ideation, sketching, prototyping, Illustrator, CNC machining, instruction design
REFERENCE BOARDS & SKETCHES
I began by making reference boards for my chosen animal and sketching the most prominent attributes.
SYNTHESIS
I then synthesized the physical and geometric attributes of the Macaw to be able to reference when designing.
3D EXPLORATION
I began to prototype and test different techniques to bring the different features into 3D.
ITERATION
I continued to iterate different 3D versions of the mask, this time taking into account how the different elements could join together to create the face of the Macaw.
ILLUSTRATOR
After finalizing my pieces, I converted the design into Adobe Illustrator so that I could upload the file to the CNC machine.
My file has 2 layers to represent where the machine should cut through the bristol (pink) versus when it should only score it (cyan).
INSTRUCTIONS
In addition to the design and creation of the mask, I also developed instructions on how to assemble it, so that anyone could put it together!
These instructions took several iterations, and I tested them on many different generations to ensure they were comprehensible.
