MONOLITH

A wooden ergonomic form

PROJECT LENGTH: 3 Weeks
PROJECT GOAL: Design an ergonomic monolithic form, focusing on aesthetics, craft, and form.
PROJECT SKILLS: Sculpting, woodworking
IDEATION
I began by sculpting Roma Plastina clay to create an organic, ergonomic form that could be held in multiple ways. I developed the form as I continued to discover what was working.
   TRANSITIONING
Once I finalized my form, I sliced it into 1/4" pieces     and labeled each. I made sure to indent a                     line down the form to ensure that I could put it             back together correctly.
PREPARING THE WOOD
I then laid out all my slices of clay onto a 1/4" thick piece of maple wood. When laying out the pieces I  turned each a quarter so that my final piece would have bands from the alternating grain patterns.
WOODWORK
Once I had all my pieces traced, I was able to cut them out on a band saw and smooth the edges with a belt sander. I then used the axes I drew on them to line up each wood slice and laminate them together.
I used a die grinder to ensure the hole that went through my piece was wide and smooth.
To finish my monolith, I step sanded from 120 grit up to 8000 grit and then polished it with Linseed Oil.
