SEA ANEMONE

A wooden automata inspired by sea life

PROJECT LENGTH: 5 Weeks
PROJECT GOAL: Create a mechanized narrative to enhance my ability to successfully integrate aesthetics and the functionality of basic mechanisms and ergonomics.
PROJECT SKILLS: Sketching, Prototyping, CAD Modeling, Laser Cutting, and Woodworking.
IDEATION
I began by creating a mood board to generate ideas as to what exactly I wanted to create.
MOCK-UPS
After finalizing my direction, I created aesthetic low-fidelity models.
PROTOTYPING
I began to prototype and develop the mechanism for the automata. I mostly tested and iterated different versions of living hinges and cams.
WOODWORK
Once my mechanism and aesthetics were finalized I began process work in the wood shop. I modeled the base in Fusion 360 so it could be cut using the CNC Router. All of my cams and anemone tentacles were laser cut and I used the drill press to create holes.
ASSEMBLY
With all my individual pieces ready, it was time to assemble!
